28, 2009 - Bolton Kinsmen Organize The Annual Bolton Terry Fox Run
The
annual Terry Fox Run will once again be held in Bolton on Sunday, September
13, 2009. The Kinsmen Club of Bolton have been busy getting everything
in order for another successful Run. Close to 100 runners raising $15,000
participated last year and the goal for this year is to match and improve
last year's efforts. The meeting place for all participants will be
at the Bolton Kinsmen Centre located at 35 Chapel Street beside Baffos
and after a brief ceremony, the Run will officially start at 9:00am.
This year a 1 and 5 km run route will be set up; a 10 km run has also
been set up for serious runners. After the runners finish their run,
hamburgers, hot dogs and pop will be served. Pledge sheets can be picked
up at the Albion Bolton Community Centre, Caledon Fitness Centre or
Ellwood Memorial Public School or call John Stegeman at 905-857-3021
for more information. Check out the Bolton Kinsmen web site for more
information and the run routes-www. Boltonkin.com.
The
Terry Fox Foundation's mission is to maintain the vision and principles
of Terry Fox while raising money for innovative cancer research through
the annual Terry Fox Run.
In
1980, Terry Fox was a young man with cancer who wanted to make a contribution
to the fight against the disease. One year later, Terry had touched
the collective heart of all Canadians and today is one or our country's
heroes.
Terry's
Marathon of Hope was the start of a dream that eventually evolved a
successful partnership between The Terry Fox Foundation and the National
Cancer Institute of Canada.
The
roots of this partnership started when Terry Fox, whose right leg was
amputated in 1977 because of osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer), decided
to run across Canada in 1980 to raise funds for cancer research. Terry's
objective was to raise awareness of all Canadians about the critical
need to find a cure for cancer. His fierce determination resulted in
his running 26 miles every day for 143 days. By February 1, 1981 Terry's
hope of raising $1 from every Canadian was realized-the Terry Fox Marathon
of Hope totaled $24.2 million. Although Terry died a few months later,
one month before his 23rd birthday, his legacy lives on through the
Terry Fox Foundation. It is a tribute to Terry's quiet determination
and courage that the Terry Fox Run is the largest single-day fundraising
event for cancer research in the world.
Be
at the Bolton Kinsmen Centre on Sunday, September 13, 2009 to help keep
Terry's Dream alive.

25, 2009 - Kinsmen support local volunteer

Bolton resident
and 3rd year nursing student Vanessa Schittenhelm is giving up vacation
time this coming August to volunteer help to the people of Sousa, Dominican
Republic. Hero Holiday is a charitable program that provides opportunities
to people to participate in humanitarian relief projects by bringing
practical assistance to those living in extreme poverty. Among other
things, volunteers assist with building projects (schools and houses);
assist in distributing food, clothing, toys and supplies that have been
donated; provide primary medical care to Dominican and Haitian refugees
and provide basic health teaching. Bolton Kinsmen were pleased to support
Vanessa's project with a $300 donation, presented by Kinsmen President
George denHaan, toward the $2,300 Vanessa needs to raise for her project.
People and groups who would like to support Vanessa can connect to her
by email through boltonkin@gmail.com.

15, 2009 - Kinsmen Announce Giant Garage Sale
Spring has sprung
and the season for garage sales is on! To kick off the season, Bolton
Kinsmen are organizing a Giant Garage Sale in the "Poultry Palace" at
the Bolton Fair Grounds on May 9,
starting at 8AM. "When we say "Giant" we mean this is going to be the
"Big One!" of the year" said Joe Luschak, the Kinsmen Co-chair for this
fund raising project.
"We are inviting
the community to donate household goods, in saleable condition, items
such as bedding, toys, small kitchen appliances, new and used clothing,
electronics and sporting equipment. We will turn these items into meaningful
fund raising dollars which we will put back into the community" said
Kinsmen project Co-chair Leslie Caldwell. Kinsmen have already accumulated
many items on their own and many of those items are still in their original
packaging and other barely used at all. Kinsmen are asking everyone
in the Bolton area to call them to add to the collection.
"Everybody has things
around the house just too good to be discarded and yet perhaps too hard
to get rid of otherwise" noted Caldwell. "This is a great opportunity
for people to donate these items to make space, for other people to
buy the things they need at great prices, and for us to raise money
for our community projects" she added.
Kinsmen
will pick up any gently used, saleable items donated to the
sale. Kinsmen reserve the right to decline those items they deem unsalable.
Kinsmen will also have their costume jewellery on sale with the biggest
collection yet. These are all new bracelets, necklaces, earrings and
pins donated to Kinsmen by the manufacturer.
Bolton Kinsmen support
many community functions such as the Terry Fox Run, The Santa Claus
Parade, Senior Christmas Drive, community service initiatives, student
bursaries, minor hockey, baseball and soccer teams. More information
on Kinsmen and the garage sale is available on their website www.boltonkin.com.
If you have any items to donate and be picked up, please
call Joe @ 905-857-2801 or email boltonkin@gmail.com

Bolton Kinsmen had
a special meeting for the official swearing in of its newest members,
the first women to join the club.

The Kinsmen Club
of Bolton was founded in 1964 as a men's club with a separate Kinette
Club for women (inactive for several years) but voted last year to expand
to be a fully integrated club with the recruiting of women. Kinsmen
are very active in the community supporting projects like the Terry
Fox Run, Christmas Parade, Pond Hockey Championship, election debates
and various fund raisers to support local sports and other projects.

ways. Anyone interested in Kinsmen or Kindred Spirits can email boltonkin@gmail.com

10, 2008 - Kinsmen announce parade float winners

It
was a cold December day but the crowds came out for the Annual Kin Club
Parade to welcome Santa to Bolton.
The
theme of this year's parade was "A Ginger Bread Christmas" and the float
entry judged most reflecting the theme was entered by the YMCA.
The
Best Float overall was judged to be a drum and brass "band" of nut crackers
hand-made and entered by team members of The Kindred Spirits Dragon
Boat Racing Team.
The
most impressive commercial float was entered by a consortium of companies
and featured a smoking volcano.
The
Kin Club of Bolton again organized and managed the parade and give thanks
to the following local business for their financial support that made
the parade possible; Alliston Equipment Ltd., B. W. Cooney & Assoc.,

1 2008 - Kinsmen ask for no dumping at Clothing Bins

Bolton
Kinsmen are a local, volunteer service club and one of their projects
is to collect used clothing in their blue bins located in the Bolton
Zehr's parking lot. The clothing donations from these bins are recycled
for reuse and provide a major source of income for the Kinsmen who in
turn use the money for community projects.
Too
often unfortunately, people use these bins to dump discarded toys, furniture,
flooring, appliances, other hard goods and sometimes outright garbage.
"We
had one instance where someone dumped an old bathroom sink along with
broken out ceramic tiles and just dumped the whole mess in one of the
bins. We have had mattresses, cupboards, tables, chairs and even a wringer
washing machine dumped on us" noted Kinsmen President George denHaan.
"If
it can't be worn like clothing, shoes and other apparel items, you are
just dumping your junk on us even if it might have further uses. Bins
are emptied daily but too often our volunteers arrive to haul away other
people's garbage and that is very discouraging when our only goal is
to serve our community" denHaan added.
There
is no excuse for this behaviour as Caledon has excellent facilities
including the Bolton Community Recycling Centre, for recycling reusable
materials at the Reuse Store and facilities for disposal of hazardous,
building and regular waste materials. Located at 109 Industrial Rd.,
the Bolton Recycling Centre is open to the public Tuesday through. Saturday.,
8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

The
Kindred Spirits Dragon Boat Racing Club pose with some of the characters
from their float entry for this year's Kinsmen Christmas Parade running
this Saturday.
Modelled
after a collection of actual nut crackers, creative director Cary Marenguer,
seated front row right, worked over the last 6 weeks with the more than
20 team volunteers to build 31 unique characters using cardboard tubes,
flower pots and other recycled parts, nuts and bolts, glue, lots of
bits from dollar stores and tons of ingenuity.
The
parade kicks off this Saturday at 11:00AM running along Queen Street
(Hwy 50) from Queensgate through downtown Bolton and ending at Centennial
Drive by about 12:30PM

9, 2008 - Kinsmen announce new executive and open house

Kin
Canada Deputy Governor Terry Lascos (at right) presided over the swearing
in of the Bolton Kinsmen Executive for 2008-09. This year's executive
includes (right to left) President George denHaan, Vice President Richard
Hatch, Treasurer Robert Ward, Secretary Steve Vickers, Registrar Bohdan
Romanyk, Directors Ian Pugh and Cary Marengeur.
At
their last general meeting, Bolton Kinsmen introduced their new Executive
for the new year beginning July 1. This followed the club's previous
meeting where members voted overwhelmingly to actively welcome women
into the club membership. "This will likely be the last all-male executive
to start a new year" commented Club President George denHaan. "Not only
will we be actively inviting women into the club, I will personally
encourage their participation in the Executive to move the club forward"
denHaan added.
Bolton
Kinsmen has only had an all-male membership since its charter in 1964.
There has been a Bolton Kinette Club for women only from time to time
in the past but there has not been an active women's club in the area
for many years. The inclusion of women into the club makes Bolton Kinsmen
leaders in the cross-country Kin Canada organization where integrated
clubs are still fairly rare.
Since
the inclusion announcement, several new male prospective members have
also expressed new interest in joining the club. "I think this new openness
is attracting new members who perhaps viewed us previously, rightly
or wrongly, as a stodgy old boys club. They like the idea of contributing
to the community like we do, but will be more comfortable in a modern,
inclusive environment" noted denHaan.
The
club also announced there would be an open house to welcome anyone interested
in finding out more about the club at the Kin Centre at 35 Chapel St
on Tuesday July 22nd starting at 7:30 PM. The club can be contacted
at boltonkin@gmail.com
